Zlatan Ibrahimovic scores twice as PSG stroll to 5-0 win over Toulouse

Paris St Germain’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic
Zlatan Ibrahimovic struck twice as Paris St Germain made up for their midweek Champions League defeat to Real Madrid by crushing Toulouse 5-0 to stretch their Ligue 1 lead to 11 points on Saturday.
Ángel Di María netted after six minutes to set PSG on their way, while second-half substitute Lucas and Ezequiel Lavezzi also got on the scoresheet. “We’re doing something outstanding. I think we can finish the [league] season unbeaten,” said Lucas.
Caen beat Guincamp 2-1, thanks to second-half goals from Julien Féret and Andy Delort, to move to second place, though they will be overtaken if either side wins Sunday’s meeting between Olympique Lyonnais and St Etienne, both two points further behind on 22, having played a game fewer.
Di María put PSG in front with a long-range free-kick that flew just over a crowd of players in the box and bounced past the Toulouse keeper, Al Ahamada. Ibrahimovic then headed home his 50th Ligue 1 goal at the Parc des Princes in the 18th minute after Marcel Tisserand inexplicably headed the ball straight to the Sweden striker, who was standing five yards in front of an empty net.
Lucas came off the bench to replace Edinson Cavani and made an immediate impact, scoring with a header in the 66th minute. He then slalomed through the defence in the 75th minute and, though his shot was tipped away by Ahamada, Ibrahimovic poked in the rebound, his ninth goal in his last eight league appearances and his 115th in 140 games since joining PSG from Milan before the 2012-13 season.
Lavezzi rubbed salt into Toulouse’s wounds three minutes later after Jean-Armel Kana-Biyik totally misjudged the flight of Ibrahimovic’s pass, allowing the Argentinian to run clear of the visiting defence. “If we continue like this we will be able to rest some players after Christmas in order to concentrate on the Champions League,” said the PSG centre back Thiago Silva.

Chelsea loses again in EPL, Bayern & PSG win big

Chelsea hit a low Saturday with a third straight loss in the English Premier League, while Bayern Munich rediscovered its dominant form in Germany.
Although absent for the 1-0 loss at Stoke, Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho will be under even more pressure after the preseason favorite fell to just three points above the previously unthinkable relegation zone.
Bayern, meanwhile, continued its march to repeating as Bundesliga champions by beating Stuttgart 4-0.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic also scored twice as French titleholders Paris Saint-Germain thrashed Toulouse 5-0 to move 11 points clear at the top of the table.
Here is a look at Europe’s major leagues on Saturday:
___
ENGLAND
Chelsea and Mourinho were returned to an unwanted crisis by another defeat for the defending champions.
Stoke broke the deadlock when Marko Arnautovic scored with an acrobatic effort in the 53rd minute.
Mourinho missed the away game after receiving a stadium ban for his behavior toward match officials in a 2-1 defeat at West Ham in October.
Manchester United ended its Premier League scoring drought with a 2-0 win over West Bromwich Albion from Jesse Lingard’s first goal with the club and Juan Mata’s penalty.
Leicester striker Jamie Vardy scored for the ninth straight league match in a 2-1 victory against Watford.
Newcastle, meanwhile, moved out of the relegation zone following a 1-0 away win against Bournemouth. Norwich beat Swansea 1-0, and Southampton defeated Sunderland 1-0.
___
GERMANY
Thomas Mueller helped produce goals for Arjen Robben, Douglas Costa and Robert Lewandowski before he scored himself as Bayern got back to winning in the Bundesliga.
Bayern’s league record 10-game winning start ended in at Eintracht Frankfurt the previous weekend. Its 34 points from 12 games is a Bundesliga record.
“If we don’t win the treble, it’s a bad season,” Bayern coach Pep Guardiola said.
Andre Schubert’s six-game winning start in charge of Borussia Moenchengladbach ended in a 0-0 draw with Ingolstadt.
Cologne defeated Bayer Leverkusen 2-1 away. Wolfsburg also lost 2-0 at Mainz, Hoffenheim drew 0-0 with Eintracht Frankfurt, and Darmstadt drew 1-1 with Hamburger SV.
___
FRANCE
Four days after suffering its first defeat of the season at Real Madrid in the Champions League, PSG increased its unbeaten run in the domestic competition to 22 matches.
Angel Di Maria opened the scoring before Ibrahimovic made it 2-0 in the 18th.
Lucas scored midway through the second half, Ibrahimovic got his second of the match in the 75th, and substitute Ezequiel Lavezzi finished off the rout.
With Lyon not hosting Saint-Etienne until Sunday, Caen moved provisionally into second spot after beating Guingamp 2-1.
Also, Montpellier beat Nantes 2-1 to escape the relegation zone. Lorient demolished last-place Troyes 4-1, Ajaccio won 2-1 at Reims, and Bastia drew 1-1 at Lille.
___
SPAIN
Paco Alcacer and Dani Parejo scored twice each to lead Valencia to a much-needed 5-1 victory at third-place Celta Vigo.
Valencia’s first away win in the league in four outings came after a disappointing 1-0 loss at Ghent in the Champions League.
Celta wasted a chance to pull level on points with the top two teams in the league before leader Real Madrid and second-place Barcelona play on Sunday.
Also, Eibar remained in sixth place by beating Getafe 3-1 from two goals and a penalty earned by Sergi Enrich.
Javi Guerra scored twice as 10-man Rayo Vallecano edged Granada 2-1, Deportivo La Coruna drew 1-1 at bottom side Levante, and Real Betis downed Malaga 1-0.
___
ITALY
AC Milan’s three-game winning streak was ended by Atalanta in a 0-0 draw at home in Serie A, though 16-year-old goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma was crucial to the Rossoneri earning a point.
Donnaruma pulled off two stunning saves in quick succession about an hour in, parrying Luca Cigarini’s header before denying Alberto Grassi.
Bologna also won 2-0 at Hellas Verona.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Javier Pastore out

Paris Saint-Germain will be without Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Javier Pastore for their Ligue 1 clash with Bordeaux.

Laurent Blanc has confirmed neither Zlatan Ibrahimovic nor Javier Pastore will be in Paris Saint-Germain's squad for Friday's visit of Bordeaux in Ligue 1.
The French champions are seeking to make it five league wins from five this season but have seen Sweden striker Ibrahimovic return fatigued from international duty while Pastore continues to struggle with a calf problem.
Blanc explained he had no concerns over Ibrahimovic's general fitness, with PSG's UEFA Champions League opener against Malmo coming up on Tuesday.
"I have no concern about [Ibrahimovic's] physical shape [but] he is not in the best of conditions," explained the Frenchman on Thursday.
"He could play tomorrow but he will not play tomorrow. We decided to leave him to rest so he is in top form for the Champions League."
Pastore was withdrawn 10 minutes into PSG's 1-0 win over Montpellier last month and is yet to fully recover.
"Pastore will not be with the group tomorrow. He has trained well [over the international break] and he has needed it," added Blanc.
"He had two small injuries around the calf. He needs to work and to complete the sessions he is missing.
"To express himself best, he needs to be in a very good state."

PSG seek perfection with one eye on Europe

The action returns to the European domestic leagues this weekend after a break for qualifying games for international tournaments. In France, in the first game of the Ligue Un weekend, the champions PSG entertain Bordeaux.
Laurent Blanc says he is likely to keep striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic on the bench for the visit of Bordeaux.
Ligue 1 leaders Paris Saint-Germain take on Bordeaux at the Parc des Princes on Friday night looking to maintain their unbeaten start to the season.
The champions go into the fifth match of the campaign with doubts over the fitness of star striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

He suffered a stomach injury while on international duty with Sweden, and PSG boss Laurent Blanc says he wants to rest the striker so he will be ready for PSG's opening game in the Uefa Champions League on Tuesday against Malmo - the club where the 33-year-old started his career.
Bordeaux also have Europe on their minds. They take on Liverpool next Thursday in the Europa League.
Second-placed Reims play on Saturday night at Toulouse while third-placed Rennes travel to Nantes on Sunday afternoon. The final game of the Ligue Un weekend involves Marseille and Bastia whose supporters have been banned from travelling to the southern French city.
Bernard Cazeneuve, the interior minister, said he had ordered the clampdown due to repeated clashes between rival fans.
"Individual or collective travel between the communes of Corsica and Marseille, by any means, for anyone claiming to be a fan of SC Bastia or behaving like one is forbidden," he added.

Manchester United Harus Beli Zlatan Ibrahimovic kata Paul Scholes

Man Utd transfers: Louis van Gaal urged to sign Zlatan Ibrahimovic

Jan Aage Fjortoft says Zlatan Ibrahimovic would add something extra to the Manchester United side

Louis van Gaal should sign Zlatan Ibrahimovic to add something extra to the Manchester United squad, according to Jan Aage Fjortoft.

The Red Devils are looking toothless up front after a goalless draw with Newcastle United at Old Trafford in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.
United captain Wayne Rooney has failed to score in their opening three Premier League games of the season.
The 20-time English champions missed out on Pedro Rodriguez last week after the Spain international joined Chelsea in a £21.1m deal.
But former Sheffield United man Fjortoft reckons Ibrahimovic could be the solution to United’s goal-scoring woes.
Ibrahimovic has hinted that he could leave Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain in the summer transfer window.
The Sweden international previously played under Van Gaal at Ajax, although the pair had a fractious relationship at the Eredivisie side.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic has promised his next move will be a surprise
The Paris Saint-Germain forward has been the subject of intense speculation after he promised his next move would be a 'big surprise'.
And with frontrunners AC Milan seemingly ruled out, reports of United and Chelsea moving for the 33-year-old might carry more weight.
There's a one in a million chance that he'll come back
Adriano Galliani
Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani has confirmed the striker's 'surprise' destination will not be the San Siro.
He told Italian publication Corriere della Sera: "There's a one in a million chance that he'll come back [to Milan]."
The Sweden international currently has just one year left to run on his PSG deal ,and owner NasserAl-Khelaifi insists he will see it out.
The former Barcelona man has also been linked with a big-money move to Qater-based side Al-Sadd who are hoping the Sweden international will link-up with his old team-mate, Xavi.

Chairman sets Zlatan Ibrahimovic transfer timeline with Man Utd, Arsenal and Milan keen

ZLATAN IBRAHIMOVIC will leave Paris Saint-Germain at the end of next season, says club chairman Nasser Al-Khelaifi.

Sweden international Ibrahimovic has been linked with a move away from PSG all summer.
Milan are favourites to re-sign the 33-year-old striker, although both Manchester United and Arsenal are reportedly keen in the ace.
But Al-Khelaifi inists suitors must wait until next summer to secure the transfer.
“Ibrahimovic has a contract for one more year and will stay with us,” he said during Angel Di Maria's unveiling at PSG today.
Both United and Arsenal are expected to sign another striker before the transfer window shuts.
United have Wayne Rooney and James Wilson as their sole forward players, with Javier Hernandez set to depart the club.
And Arsenal are said to be considering their option after Real Madrid again denied any intention of selling Karim Benzema.
Al-Khelaifi was asked how he saw new £44million signing Di Maria and Ibrahimovic fitting into the same side.

Di Maria was confirmed as the club's most recent big-money signing today when he switched from Manchester United.
"We are very proud that Angel di Maria has chosen Paris Saint-Germain," Al-Khelaifi said.
"He is an incredibly talented player, with a frightening speed and ability to beat opposition players.
"He adds his name to the club's strong South American community and, above all, the big Paris Saint-Germain family.
"By signing Angel di Maria, Paris Saint-Germain is once again showing the club's constant ambition to reach the summits of the European game."

Zlatan Ibrahimovic ELBOWS John Terry during Chelsea's pre-season clash with Paris Saint-Germain

The Swede gave his side the lead in the International Champions Cup encounter in North Carolina - but this ugly incident marred his involvement.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic elbowed Chelsea skipper John Terry during last night's pre-season clash with Paris Saint-Germain.

The International Champions Cup clash ended 1-1 in North Carolina with the Blues emerging victorious after a 6-5 penalty shootout victory.
However, an ugly incident involving PSG's talismanic striker marred the encounter.
During the first-half, Ibrahimovic challenged for a bouncing ball with Terry - which the Chelsea skipper managed to win.
Incident: Zlatan and Terry clash
But as the Swede landed, he threw his elbow towards Terry - landing a heavy blow on the side of his opponent's head.
Understandably hurt by the challenge, Terry appealed to the referee who had a word with both players before resuming play.
Ibrahimovic had given PSG the lead in the States with his first-half strike, tapping home from close range after a rebound.
Victor Moses hit back for Chelsea after the break before Jose Mourinho's men secured the victory 6-5 on penalties, with goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois notching the winning spotkick.

It is not the first time Ibrahimovic has been involved in a controversial incident with Chelsea, after being sent off during a Champions Leage encounter at Stamford Bridge last season.
The PSG striker was dismissed after a high challenge on Oscar, before accusing the Blues' players of acting "like babies" as they protested to officials.
“I don’t know if I have to get angry or start to laugh. For me when I saw the red card I was like ‘the guy doesn’t know what he’s doing.
“That is not the worst. The worst is when I got the red card all the Chelsea players come around. It felt like I had a lot of babies around me.”

Transfer News: Zlatan Ibrahimovic says he is sure to remain at PSG

Paris Saint-Germain striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic shot down speculations about the Swedish international’s move to Manchester United despite revealing an uncertain future with the French giants. The 33-year-old Ibrahimovic, who has also been linked to a return to AC Milan, has recently said his future is in the hands of his agent Mino Raiola.
Ibrahimovic has ended the rumours surrounding him, saying he is happy at PSG, according to Independent.co.uk. The Swedish striker added that he has one more year to play for the French champions and would just see what happens after his contract expires next year.
Ibrahimovic has been linked with the Red Devils this summer, giving the PSG striker a chance at a reunion with United boss Louis van Gaal, who returned to Ajax in 2004 as a technical trainer. However, in his recent interview, the long-haired striker admitted his relationship with van Gaal was still not good, saying that the issue between him and van Gaal would be a huge problem. He also described the former Napoli coach as a “pompous a—“ in his autobiography, “I Am Zlatan.”
“Whoever I work with, I never had this kind of problems, because at the end I need to do my job, he needs to do his job, and I think a lot of fights would happen, but that’s something I like,” Ibrahimovic added.
Meanwhile, PSG is close to adding another striker, who can help Ibrahimovic in the club’s campaign for the upcoming season. According to ESPN FC, Les Parisiens is close to signing Angel Di Maria from Old Trafford, with PSG agreeing for a €63 million (AU$95.1 million) fee for the 27-year-old Argentine striker.
United has been reportedly holding out the deal, claiming that the Ligue 1 champions have only offered €40 million (AU$60.4 million), which falls short of Di Maria’s signing price with the Red Devils last year as noted by the Guardian. However, PSG coach Laurent Banc is still “positive” the deal will be completed soon.
"The matter is close to being finished," Blanc confirmed ahead of their preseason friendly against United in Chicago. "When I tell you that, it's the truth.”

Zlatan Ibrahimovic puts the Lionel Messi-Cristiano Ronaldo debate to bed

Zlatan Ibrahimovic is in the States with PSG vying for the super, hugely, massively important International Champions Cup, andstopped in with SI.com to play a fun little game of word association with host Maggie Gray.
Though having one of the most mercurial and interesting footballers on the face of the planet use the fewest number of words possible feels like a miss, Ibrahimovic still managed to shake things up.
Gray decided to get straight to it and get at the truth of one of world soccer’s largest barbershop debates (or pubs or cafes or whichever place of general assembly).
“Lionel Messi?”
“Fantastic.”
“Cristiano Ronaldo?”
“Good.”
Snap.
This jab might have something to do with the fact that rumors have been swirling around about PSG (who’ve just had their Financial Fair Play restrictions lifted which means they can splash their endless reserves of oil money all over the transfer market) snapping up Ronaldo to replace the aging Ibrahimovic. Could be that he’s still sore about Ronaldo and company knocking Sweden out of 2014 World Cup qualifying.
Of course, it’s more likely that this isn’t a jab, but a mere assertion of fact, because Zlatan is just closer to the truths of the universe than the rest of us.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic Interview Part 2: On Champions League, Euro '16, more

Zlatan Ibrahimovic has won just about everything as a player, but he has yet to get his hands on two major trophies.
The UEFA Champions League title and a major international title are two items missing from the PSG and Sweden star striker's résumé, and in Part 2 of our exclusive sit-down with Ibrahimovic on SI Now, Ibrahimovic discusses his quest for the elusive Champions League trophy and what it would be like to play Euro 2016 in France with Sweden.
Ibrahimovic also delves into his life off the field, including his two sons–"They're two small beasts"– and his involvement with a campaign to end world hunger. We close by playing a game of word association, involving some of the biggest names in world soccer, and Ibrahimovic's first-instinct responses to Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Oguchi Onyewu and especially Pep Guardiola, will certainly entertain.

Why are AC Milan so obsessed with Zlatan Ibrahimovic?

There are bizarre transfer stories every year. Deals that just don't make sense, deals that do but fall apart for no apparent reason and high-visibility pursuits that go absolutely nowhere. This summer, though, the strangest transfer saga has probably been this slow-burning pursuit of AC Milan trying to get Zlatan Ibrahimovic into a rossonero shirt again.

It's been like some bizarre rom-com love story trying to play out, with two people who clearly want to be with one another running into one roadblock after another. They date for a hot minute and things look great, but they break up because of circumstances they can't control. Then after some time apart, they realize they can't live without each other and blah blah blah.

That's been the story of Zlatan and Milan. They had two great years together, including Milan's last Serie A title win, and the Swedish godling scored a ton of goals while he was there. But then Milan's financial woes took hold in a serious way, and with Zlatan getting paid some massive wages, they had to go their separate ways, with Ibrahimovic heading to Paris Saint-Germain and Milan turning to such striking luminaries as ... Giampaolo Pazzini. Yikes.

So that sense of nostalgia certainly helps explain some of why Milan want Zlatan to come back so badly, but is there any reason beyond wanting to get that old flame back?

With new investors snapping up a huge chunk of the club and a new manager at the helm, Milan want to start flexing their financial muscles again. The trouble is, they've been between bad and mediocre since, well, the last time Zlatan was wearing the black and red shirt, so attracting the kind of talent they need to get back into the title hunt in Italy will be difficult at best. Snagging Zlatan, even at 33, would go a long ways towards helping attract other quality players to the side, guys who want to play with that level of star.

It's not a guarantee, and it's a big risk considering that he'd still have big wages, and it's an even further big risk because at this age, Zlatan's skills could just fall off a cliff at any time, leaving him an expensive anchor in the squad. But if Milan can get even one good season out of the big Swede, it could help push a revival at the San Siro that finally gets Milan moving in the right direction again.

Sure, right now Milan look like a crazy ex getting up to crazy antics to get their old lover back, but there's still a very good chance of a beautiful, sappy-happy ending thanks to some crazy plot twist. It may seem crazy on the surface, but Milan have a lot of good reasons to want Zlatan back in the fold. It's not without risks, sure, but there's a lot of upside to the move, and not just from what Zlatan can do on the pitch by himself. So go on, Milan. Go get your guy.

Transfer News: Zlatan Ibrahimovic To Leave PSG For Milan On August

Paris Saint-Germain striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic has held meetings with AC Milan for a Serie A side return this summer. The 33-year-old Ibrahimovic has reportedly negotiated a three-year deal worth $8 million a year with the Italian club, Pro Soccer Talk of NBC Sports reported.
The Swedish international, who has previously played for Milan from 2010 to 2012, will complete his transfer from Parc des Princes to San Siro on August 1 after PSG plays Olympique Lyonnais in the French championship in Canada according to Italian journalist Alfredo Pedulla. Ibrahimovic will be a part of Milan’s rebuilding team after the club hired Sinisa Mihajlovic as replacement for sacked Filippo Inzaghi.
The Serbian boss have already started changes in Rossoneri after acquiring strikers Carlos Bacca, Luiz Adriano, and midfielder Andrea Bertolacci for a total transfer fee amount of $65 million. Bacca expressed his confidence about returning Milan to former glories, but admits Ibrahimovic’s return would certainly help the club to bounce back from last season’s disappointing campaign.
“Ibra is a player that has scored many goals. I don't know if he will return to Milan but he would definitely help us out,” Bacca said as noted by Daily Mail.
The Colombian striker has vowed to give his best in every matches in order to reach the club’s goal to get back into the Champions League. The 28-year-old Bacca also admitted his long time dream of playing at a club like Milan.
"The first objective is to qualify for the Champions League and get back fighting again for the Scudetto. I chose Milan for their ambitious project and because they are a great club, the biggest club in Italy, and I've always had the ambition of playing at a club like Milan,” Bacca said via ESPN FC Asia.
Ibrahimovic is entering the final year of his current contract with PSG. He has recorded 126 appearances with the French club and will have his 127th game next month in Montreal.

Report: Zlatan Ibrahimovic to leave PSG for AC Milan after French Super Cup on Aug. 1

The career of Zlatan Ibrahimovic could easily be described as nomadic — in the 14 years since he left Malmo FF in his native Sweden, the Swedish striker has played for six different clubs in four different countries (Netherlands, Italy, Spain and France).
Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Paris Saint-Germain
His 126 official appearances and three seasons played for Paris Saint-Germain, his current club, signify his longest stay at a club during that span. And yet, Ibrahimovic might just be gone from PSG after making appearance No. 127, if a report out of Italy is to be believed.
According to Italian journalist Alfredo Pedulla, Ibrahimovic has held talks with AC Milan, for whom he previously played from 2010 to 2012, over a transfer back to the Serie A side this summer. According to Pedulla’s report, Ibrahimovic has already negotiated a three-year deal with the Rossoneri that would pay him north of $8 million per year.
PSG appearance No. 127 would reportedly come against Lyon in the French Super Cup on Aug. 1 in Montreal, Canada, after which the 33-year-old would complete his transfer from Paris to Milan.
After finishing 10th in Serie A last season, AC Milan fired Filippo Inzaghi and hired Sinisa Mihajlovic. Upon his arrival at the club, Mihajlovic has spent close to $65 million in transfer fees to rebuild the squad. Strikers Carlos Bacca ($32.5 million) and Luiz Adriano ($9 million) and midfielder Andrea Bertolacci ($22 million) account for more than 99 percent of that total.

Galliani: AC Milan will wait for Ibra but Witsel pursuit is over

The Rossoneri refuse to give up on their hopes of brining Zlatan back to San Siro but have ended their interest in Zenit midfielder Axel Witsel
Galliani: AC Milan will wait for Ibra but Witsel pursuit is over
AC Milan CEO Adriano Galliani says the club have not given up on their hopes to bring Zlatan Ibrahimovic back to San Siro.
The 33-year-old Sweden international left the club for Paris Saint-Germain in 2012 as the French side sealed a sensational double swoop for the striker and Brazil defender Thiago Silva, who has also been linked with a return to the Rossoneri in recent weeks.
However, PSG coach Laurent Blanc has dismissed any possibility of Ibrahimovic leaving the Parc des Princes this summer and Galliani is happy to put Milan’s interest on hold.
“We will wait to see what happens. Ibra is the only one with a licence to kill,” he told reporters.
Meanwhile, Galliani revealed that Milan have ended their interest in Zenit ace Axel Witsel as he believes that they are now well stocked in midfield
“No [we won’t sign Witsel], that’s enough now," he added. "The only objective left is a central defender.”
With Thiago Silva’s agent insisting Milan cannot afford him, the club turned their attentions to Roma’s Alessio Romagnoli but had a bid of around €25 million rebuffed by the capital club this week.
Milan are restructuring their squad under new coach Sinisa Mihajlovic after last season's 10th-place finish, which cost former coach Filippo Inzaghi his job.
Strikers Carlos Bacca and Luiz Adriano, and midfielder Andrea Bertolacci, have already arrived at a combined cost of almost €60 million, while Stephan El Shaarawy, Giampaolo Pazzini and Adil Rami are among those to have departed.

Real Madrid Transfer News: Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Robin Van Persie Rumours Emerge

Real Madrid Transfer News: Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Robin Van Persie Rumours Emerge
Alex Livesey/Getty Images
Real Madrid president Florentino Perez is weighing up a move for Paris Saint-Germain striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
Jordi Blanco of Sport reports that Perez met up with Qatar Sports Investments, PSG's owners, "to negotiate a contract for ACS (Perez's company) to take on construction work in the country." However, he also noted Zlatan "was talked about" during the exchange.
Blanco discussed PSG's decision not to fulfill Ibrahimovic's request of increased wages for the final year of his contract. Although he is expected to stay, Madrid are capable of offering him the terms he desires.

Tullio M. Puglia/Getty Images
New Los Blancos coach Rafa Benitez needs an additional striker after the club decided against turning the loan of Manchester United poacher Javier Hernandez into a permanent move. Blanco doesn't believe Ibrahimovic would arrive as cover, though, and he is more likely to replace Karim Benzema in the startling lineup.
United's Robin van Persie has also been linked to the Bernabeu, as reported by ESPN (h/t AS). The Dutchman hit just 10 Premier League goals during a spell of injury and poor form last season, perhaps pushing him to the brink of a United exit.
Benitez "would be delighted" to sign Van Persie if the player agrees to playing back-up, according to AS. The report also suggests if Cristiano Ronaldo can't be convinced to take on a No. 9 role—ditching his usual position from the left wing in the process—Benitez's need for a central striker will ramp up.
Van Persie continues to be linked with a move to Turkey, reported David Amoyal of GianlucaDiMarzio.com:
Benitez is also being linked with a move for Juventus frontman Fernando Llorente, per Blanco. He would be an underwhelming capture compared to the potential arrival of Ibrahimovic or Van Persie, although he is the only player who has proved himself in Spain (with Athletic Bilbao).
Madrid's play was unbalanced under Carlo Ancelotti last season. They were wildly entertaining, sure, but their flamboyancy often struggled against top-tier opponents. While landing a new striker is an important step for Benitez—one which will provide the first glimpse of his ambition—the coach must restore sustainable order to the rest of the side.
Ronaldo will score plenty whether he's stationed in the middle or not. Thoughts of him working alongside Ibrahimovic and Bale should excite Madrid supporters, who will become frustrated with Benitez if he doesn't win a trophy in his opening season.

Victor Fraile/Getty Images
While Van Persie would also be a top-quality capture, it seems unlikely either would accept anything other than a first-team role in the Spanish capital.

Zlatan Ibrahimović (Swedish pronunciation: [ˈslaːtan ɪbraˈhiːmɔvɪtɕ]Bosnian pronunciation: [zlǎtan ibraxǐːmoʋit͡ɕ]; born 3 October 1981) is a Swedish professional footballer who plays as a striker for French club Paris Saint-Germain and the Swedish national team for which he is captain.[4]
Ibrahimović started his career at Malmö FF in the late 1990s before being signed by Ajax, where made a name for himself under Ronald Koeman. He later signed with Juventus for €16 million, and gained fame in Serie A by benefiting from his strike partnership with David Trezeguet. In 2006, Ibrahimović signed with rivals Internazionale, where he won individual awards such as the Italian Oscar del Calcio and the Swedish Guldbollen, and was named in the 2007 and 2009 UEFA Team of the Year, in addition to finishing as the league's highest scorer in 2008–09 while winning three straight Scudetti. In the summer of 2009, he transferred to Barcelona. His time at Barcelona was short-lived, however, moving back to Serie A football withA.C. Milan the following season, in a deal which made him one of the highest paid footballers in the world[5] and cost the Italian club €24 million. After winning a further Scudetto with Milan in 2010–11, Ibrahimović signed with Paris Saint-Germain in July 2012. With PSG, Ibrahimović has won three Ligue 1 championships, two Coupes de la Ligue and one Coupe de France.[6]
Ibrahimović is one of ten players to have made 100 or more appearances for the Swedish national team, and is the country'sall time leading goalscorer in international matches with 54 goals. He has represented Sweden at the 2002 and 2006 FIFA World Cups, as well as the 20042008 and 2012 UEFA European Championships.
With his playing style compared to Dutch legend Marco van Basten, Ibrahimović is one of the best finishers in the game and is regarded to be one of the best footballers of his generation.[7][8][9][10] His spectacular bicycle kick for Sweden against England won the 2013 FIFA Puskás Award for Goal of the Year.[11] In December 2013, Ibrahimović was ranked by The Guardian as the third-best player in the world.[12] In December 2014, Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter named him the second-greatest Swedish sportsperson of all time, after Björn Borg.[13]

Early life

Ibrahimović was born in Sweden to a Muslim Bosniak father, Šefik Ibrahimović,[14] who emigrated to Sweden in 1977, and a Croatian Catholic mother, Jurka Gravić,[15] who had also emigrated to Sweden, where they first met. His father was born in Bijeljina and his mother was born in the village of Prkos near Škabrnja in Croatia's Zadar County.[16]
After receiving a pair of football boots, Ibrahimović began playing at the age of six, alternating between local junior clubs Malmö BI and FBK Balkan.[17][18] While in his early teens, he was a regular for his hometown club Malmö FF.[18] At the age of 15, Ibrahimović was close to quitting his football career, in favour of working at the docks in Malmö, but hismanager convinced him to continue playing.[19] His idol was Brazilian star Ronaldo when he was growing up.[20]

Club career

Malmö FF

Ibrahimović signed his first contract with Malmö in 1996, and moved up to the senior side for the 1999 season of Allsvenskan, Sweden's top-flight league. That season, Malmö finished 13th in the league and were relegated to the second division, but returned to the top flight the next season. Arsène Wenger unsuccessfully tried to persuade Ibrahimović to join Arsenal, while Leo Beenhakker also expressed interest in the player after watching him in a training match against Norwegian side Moss FK.[21] On 22 March 2001, a deal between Ajax and Malmö regarding Ibrahimović's transfer to Amsterdam was announced, and in July, Ibrahimović officially joined Ajax for 80 million Swedish kronor (€8.7 million).[22]

Ajax

Ibrahimović received little playing time under manager Co Adriaanse, but when Adriaanse was sacked on 29 November 2001, new coach Ronald Koeman inserted Ibrahimović into the starting lineup as Ajax won the 2001–02 Eredivisie title. The next season, Ibrahimović scored twice in a 2–1 victory over French champions Lyon in his Champions League debut on 17 September 2002. He scored five Champions League goals overall as Ajax fell to A.C. Milan in the quarter-finals.[23][24] In his final season with Ajax, Ibrahimović's profile rose when he scored a goal against NAC on 22 August 2004 that was eventually voted the "Goal of the Year" by Eurosport viewers.[25]
On 18 August 2004, during an international match against the Netherlands, Ibrahimović injured Ajax teammate Rafael van der Vaart, who later accused Ibrahimović of hurting him intentionally. This led to Ibrahimović's sudden sale to Juventus on 31 August.[26]

Juventus

Ibrahimović moved from Ajax to Juventus for €16 million.[27] He was promptly inserted into the starting eleven due in part to top scorer David Trezeguet's injury problems, and scored sixteen goals. Near the end of the season, Juventus reportedly rejected a €70 million bid for him from Real Madrid, which was later revealed to be a publicity stunt initiated by Ibrahimović's agentMino Raiola, in order to increase his market value.[25] On 14 November 2005, he was awarded the Guldbollen, a prize awarded to the best Swedish footballer of the year.[28]
The following season was poor compared to his first season; his role in Juventus' attack changed, as he became less of a goalscorer and moved more to the sidelines, taking much part in the build-up play, especially as a target player, and his assist numbers increased. In the 2005–06 season, Juventus fans often got frustrated with him due to his anonymous presence in certain important games such as the Champions League defeat to Arsenal. Juventus were stripped of their last two Scudetti as part of the verdict from the Calciopoli scandal, and were relegated to Serie B. The new staff tried to persuade Ibrahimović and other top players to stay with Juventus, but the player and his agent were adamant to move on, with Raiola threatening legal action in order to extricate Ibrahimović from his contract.[29]

Internazionale

Ibrahimović and Mario Balotelli against Palermo in 2009
On 10 August 2006, Ibrahimović completed a €24.8 million move to Internazionale, signing a four-year-deal,[30] this coming only a few days after 30-year-old midfielder Patrick Vieira had completed his own transfer from Juve to the Nerazzurri.[31] Ibrahimović revealed that he had supported Inter when he was young.[32]
In his first season at the club, Ibrahimović top scored for Inter in Serie A with 15 goals, as the team won the Scudetto with a record 97 points.[33]
Ibrahimović played his 100th Serie A match on 16 September 2007. His contract was renewed in 2007, it was due to expire in June 2013.[34] It was reported that this contract had made him the world's highest paid footballer.[35]
On 18 May 2008, Ibrahimović scored both goals in a 2–0 defeat of Parma on the final day of the 2007–08 Serie A season, to give Inter a second consecutive Scudetto.[36] Overall, he scored 17 goals in 26 league matches, and was named both "Serie A Footballer of the Year" and "Serie A Foreign Footballer of the Year".[36]
Ibrahimović ended the 2008–09 Serie A season as the league's top goalscorer with 25 goals, helping Inter to another league title. He was also named both "Footballer of the Year" and "Foreign Footballer of the Year" for the second consecutive season. His goal against Bologna was voted "Goal of the Year". He scored it with his heel without moving and accurately into the net from a cross by Adriano.[37]

Barcelona

I was probably with the best team in history. Their football was beautiful. When I prepared for a game, I knew I had won even before we started. I looked at the players around me and saw Messi and Iniesta and Xavi and Puyol and Piqué and Dani Alves and Busquets. Unbelievable! It was football from another planet and I loved it. It was technically perfect.
— "Zlatan Ibrahimović, the Guardian". Interview, 6 October 2014
After Maxwell completed his transfer to Barcelona, president Joan Laporta confirmed that there was an agreement in principle between Barcelona and Inter Milan for Ibrahimović to join the club in exchange for Samuel Eto'o, plus a fee.[38] Ibrahimović left Inter during their United States summer tour in the World Football Challengeon 23 July 2009 for negotiations with Barcelona, with his last match for Inter being against Chelsea.[39] After Inter agreed terms with Eto'o[40] and Barcelona with Ibrahimović,[41] Barcelona announced Ibrahimović would arrive on 26 July 2009 and undergo a medical test on 27 July 2009.[42]

Ibrahimović passed his medical and was presented to a crowd of over 60,000 at Camp Nou.[43] He signed a 5-year contract,[44] for €46 million[44]and the exchange of Eto'o (valued at €20 million) and loan of Alexander Hleb (with an option to buy for a €10 million fee),[44] with a €250 million release clause,[44] making Ibrahimović worth €66 million. However, the Hleb deal collapsed. Eventually Ibrahimović cost Barcelona €69.884 million which included other fees.[45] As per the Inter book the fee was €69.5 million,[46][47] but part of the Inter fee (about 4.5%) was redistributed to youth clubs as solidarity contribution (except Juventus.[48])

Ibrahimović started the 2009–10 season with his competitive debut for Barcelona on 23 August 2009 by assisting on a goal by Lionel Messi, leading them to the Spanish Super Cup. In his next competitive match, Barcelona won the 2009 UEFA Super Cup.[49] In his third appearance, he scored his first goal in Barcelona's La Liga season opener against Sporting Gijón in a 3–0 win. Ibrahimović went on to score in his next four games, thus setting a team record as the only player ever to score in his first five league matches.[50][51]
On 20 October, he scored his first Champions League goal for Barcelona in a group stage match against Rubin Kazan. Five days later, he scored twice in a 6–1 thrashing of Real Zaragoza, giving him a league-leading seven goals in seven league matches while bringing Barcelona to the top of the table.[52] However, on 7 November, Ibrahimović suffered a thigh injury that kept him out for three weeks. He returned to action in week 12 of the season against Real Madrid as a second-half substitute for Thierry Henry, and scored his eighth goal of the campaign.[53] He finished with eleven goals and four assists in all but two of Barcelona's first fifteen league matches. Barcelona capped off 2009 by winning the 2009 FIFA Club World Cup against Estudiantes on 19 December 2009.[54]

Ibrahimović scored Barcelona's only goal in the 2009–10 Copa del Rey first leg match of the round of sixteen in a 2–1 loss to Sevilla on 5 January 2010. On 20 January, he was selected in the 2009 UEFA Team of the Year.[55] His first goal of 2010 came on 14 February against Atlético Madrid. In his next appearance, Ibrahimović scored against Stuttgart in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League knockout stage fixture. He was sent off on 6 March in a league match against Almería, which Barcelona appealed to no avail, and he was suspended for one game.[56] A calf strain during warmups before the next La Liga match following his return from suspension againstAthletic Bilbao ruled Ibrahimović out of the second leg 4–1 victory over Arsenal, in which he scored two goals away from home, the return leg of the El Clásico against Madrid (which Barcelona won 2–0),[57] and the next league match against Deportivo La Coruña. He made his return as a substitute in the 82nd minute in against Espanyol.
Ibrahimović finished the season with a sixth-best 16 league goals, as Barcelona won La Liga with 99 points in 38 matches. He scored his final goal for Barcelona in a Spanish Super Cup match on 14 August in a 3–1 defeat over Sevilla, and on 25 August, he played his last match for the club against A.C. Milan for the Joan Gamper Trophy, after which he claimed to the media that his relationship with coach Pep Guardiola had started deteriorating and that Guardiola had not spoken to him since February.[58]

Milan

On 28 August 2010, Milan announced on their official website that they had acquired the services of Ibrahimović for the 2010–11 season. He was loaned out to Milan for the season, with the club having the option to purchase him outright from Barcelona for €24 million at the end of the season.[59][60] He made his team debut in a 2–0 loss to Cesena on 11 September, in which he missed a penalty late in the match,[61] and scored his first goals for the club when Milan defeated Auxerre in their first Champions League match of the season on 15 September. On 14 November, Ibrahimović scored the only goal in a 1–0 victory against his former club Inter in the Derby della Madonnina. On 20 November, he scored his seventh goal against Fiorentina in the 45th minute with an over-the-head bicycle kick, passing Alexandre Pato as the team's top goal scorer for the season. On 4 December 2010, in a game against Brescia, he assisted Kevin-Prince Boateng to give Milan an early lead and then scored the third goal by a powerful shot near the edge of the penalty box to give Milan a 3–0 win. On 12 December 2010, history repeated himself in the game against Bologna after he assisted Kevin-Prince Boateng to give Milan an early lead once again and scoring later that match to make it 3–0, leading him to 13 goals with 8 assists in 21 matches in all competitions, after which he has been compared to Milan legend Marco van Basten by both the media and van Basten himself.[7][9][62]
Ibrahimović received a three-match ban, after getting a red card in a 1–1 home draw against Bari in March 2011 for punching Bari defenderMarco Rossi in the stomach.[63] An additional three-match ban was given to Ibrahimović in February 2012, in a 1–2 home defeat againstFiorentina, for swearing at an assistant referee. Ibrahimović stated in his defense that he was talking to himself in frustration.[64] He won his firstScudetto with Milan after a stalemate against Roma. All agreements between Milan and Barcelona were confirmed on 18 June 2011.[65]
In the first official match of the 2011–12 season, Ibrahimović opened it in the best possible way scoring the first goal of a comeback to beat city rivals Inter in the Italian Super Cup. He also scored Milan's first goal of their 2011–12 Serie A season in a 2–2 draw against Lazio. He scored his third goal in the first three games in Milan's Champions League game against Czech club Viktoria Plzeň from the penalty spot and assisted the second goal. Ibrahimović justified his tag of the carrier of Milan by scoring in many games, yet still providing many assists. He scored in the next UEFA Champions League game against BATE Borisov, a goal in Milan's 4–1 win over Parma and two more in their 2–3 win over Roma, ending a successful month of October. November he scored in consecutive games against BATE, in the Champions League, and Catania, in the league. In the encounter between Milan and Barcelona, Ibrahimović scored against his old club to equalise the game at 1–1 but eventually Barça ran away 3–2 winner at the San Siro. He ended November with a brace against Chievo, his first goal took his tally of goals in Serie A to 100 goals, and the second from the penalty spot. Ibrahimović in December scored a goal in each of five Serie A games. 2012 started as he scored against Atalanta converting a penalty kick. He was the top goalscorer of Serie A, with 14 goals in 16 appearance, after the brace againstNovara, of which second goal, came after cheeky backheel. On 5 January 2012 in a match against Napoli on continuation of Serie A, Ibra awarded a red card for slappingSalvatore Aronica in an off-the-ball incident and will rule out of Milan's next three games.[66] On 15 February, in the 2011–12 Champions League season, Ibrahimović set up all two Robinho's goals and also scored by a spot kick, thus helping Milan win 4–0 over Arsenal.[67] He finished the season as Serie A top scorer with 28 goals in 32 matches.[68]

Paris Saint-Germain

2012–13 season

On 17 July 2012, Paris Saint-Germain confirmed that they had reached an agreement to acquire the sporting and economic rights of Ibrahimović from A.C. Milan, having already agreed personal terms with the striker, for an initial transfer fee of around €20 million, making Ibrahimović the most expensive footballer in combined transfer fees. Valued at €180 million, these combined fees eclipsed those commanded by Nicolas Anelka. His three-year contract would see him receive a net annual salary of €14 million including bonuses (which would be €2 million more than what he was earning per year just before he left Milan), and make him the second best paid footballer in the world behind Cameroon's Samuel Eto'o.[69][70][71]
Ibrahimović greets PSG fans on the day he signed for the club, 18 July 2012
The following day, Ibrahimović signed the contract[72] and made the following statement during the press conference: "It is a big step in my career and another dream come true. I am very happy because it is a project that I want to be involved in. I want to be part of the history of the club. I am here to win and nothing else."[73]
Ibrahimović scored twice in the second half for PSG to help them rally from 2–0 down at half-time to salvage a 2–2 home draw with Lorient in their opening 2012–13 Ligue 1 match.[74] He scored two goals in the first half to help PSG to a 2–1 win over Lille which was PSG's first Ligue 1 win after three successive draws in the first three league matches of the 2012–13 season.[75]
We haven't had a goalscorer like him in France for a long time. He is on a different planet to anyone else.
— Jean-Pierre Papin on Ibrahimović[9]
In the opening 2012–13 UEFA Champions League Group A match againstDynamo Kyiv on 18 September 2012, Ibrahimović scored his sixth goal in only his fifth appearance for Carlo Ancelotti's side through a penalty. He thus became the first man to score for six clubs in the UEFA Champions League.[76] On 8 October 2012, Ibrahimović became only the third player (after Ronaldinho and Laurent Blanc) to have played in the El Clásico in Spain, the Derby della Madonnina in Italy and the Le Classique, the derby between Marseille and Paris Saint-Germain. He scored both of PSG's goals (the first goal was from a backheel and the second was from a free kick) in the Ligue 1 Classique derby at the Stade Vélodrome on that day, with the match finishing 2–2.[77] On 11 December 2012, he scored a hat-trick in a 4–0 away win against Valenciennes.[78]
In January 2013, Ibrahimović was handed the number 10 jersey after the departure of Brazilian winger Nené. In April 2013, Ibrahimović scored in a 2–2 draw against his former club Barcelona in the quarter finals of the Champions League. However, PSG were knocked out on away goals after drawing 1–1 at Camp Nou in the second leg. He ended the season as assists leader in the 2012–13 Champions League,[79]providing 7 assists.
On 12 May 2013, Paris Saint-Germain won the Ligue 1 title after a 1–0 away win against Olympique Lyonnais, their third title and first since 1994.[80][81][82][83] He ended the year as Ligue 1's top goalscorer with 30 goals, becoming the first player to reach that mark in the French top flight since Jean-Pierre Papin in the 1989–90 season.[84] On 20 May 2013, he was named as Ligue 1's player of the year by the Union nationale des footballeurs professionnels (UNFP).[85][86]

2013–14 season

Ibrahimović netted his first goal of the season on 31 August 2013, scoring deep into stoppage time as PSG recorded a 2–0 victory over Guingamp.[87] On 24 September, it was announced that Ibrahimović had extended his contract with Paris Saint-Germain, which now will expire in 2016.[88] A week later on 2 October, the Swede scored twice as PSG ran out 3–0 winners over Benfica in a Champions League group match.[89]
On 19 October, he scored two goals in PSG's 4–0 win over Bastia, one an audacious volleyed back heel as he reached behind the defender to fire the ball into the net.[90] The goal was later named as Ligue 1's goal of the season.[91] Four days later, Ibrahimović scored four goals in PSG's 5–0 away win against RSC Anderlecht in the Champions League - he scored the eighth-fastest hat-trick in the competition's history and become the eleventh player to score four times or more in a Champions League match.[92] The third goal of the four was clocked at a speed of 93 mph.[93]
On 16 March 2014, Ibrahimović scored both goals in a 2–0 win over Saint-Étienne to surpass Carlos Bianchi's club record of 39 goals in a season.[94] On 11 May, he was named Ligue 1's player of the year for the second consecutive season.[91]
Ibrahimović ended the Ligue 1 season as top scorer with 26 goals as PSG won a second consecutive league title.[95] Overall, he scored 41 goals in all competitions, including ten in eight Champions League matches.[96]

2014–15 season

Ibrahimović scored his first two goals for Paris Saint Germain on 2 August 2014 against Guingamp in the 2014 Trophée des Champions, winning his first silverware of the season.[97] In the first league match of the season, Ibrahimović scored twice but also missed an open net and had a penalty saved as PSG drew 2−2 with Stade de Reims.[98]Ibrahimović scored his first league hat-trick of the season in a match against Saint-Étienne on 31 August.[99]
In the quarter-finals of the Coupe de la Ligue on 13 January 2015, Ibrahimović scored the only goal to win away at Saint-Étienne. The home team argued that the ball had not crossed the line, and fans threw objects onto the pitch, disrupting play for 10 minutes.[100]
On 11 March, Ibrahimović received a straight red card in a Champions League round of 16 match against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, for a foul on Oscar. PSG drew 2–2 after extra time to qualify for the quarter-finals on away goals.[101] Nine days later, he scored a hat-trick in a 3–0 win over Lorient at the Parc des Princes.[102][103][104] He netted another hat-trick on 8 April as PSG reached the 2015 Coupe de France Final with a 4–1 win over Saint-Étienne, starting with a penalty for his 100th goal for the club. He ended the match with 102 career goals for PSG, second only to Pauleta.[105][106][107] Three days later, he scored twice as PSG defeated Bastia 4–0 in the 2015 Coupe de la Ligue Final. The first goal was a penalty which he won when fouled by Sebastian Squillaci, resulting in the Bastia captain's dismissal.[108]

International career

Ibrahimović made his debut for theSweden national football team in 2001 and has become the all time leading goal scorer for his national team
Even though Ibrahimović was eligible to play for Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia, he chose to play for Sweden, his country of birth.[109]
Ibrahimović made his debut in a 0–0 friendly draw against the Faroe Islands at Tipshallen on 31 January 2001 during the 2000–01 Nordic Football Championship.[110][111] On 7 October 2001, he played his first competitive match, a 2002 World Cup qualifier against Azerbaijan, scoring in a 3–0 win. Ibrahimović was part of Sweden's 2002 FIFA World Cup finals squad who were eliminated in the round of 16 by newcomers Senegal.[112]
During 2006 World Cup qualification, Ibrahimović scored four goals in a 7–0 victory away to Malta on 4 September 2004. He did not score during the 2006 World Cup finals as Sweden were knocked out in the round of 16, this time by Germany.[113]
He was called up for a Euro 2008 qualifier against Liechtenstein on 6 September 2006, but two days before the match, he violated teamcurfew by leaving the hotel with teammates Christian Wilhelmsson and Olof Mellberg and visiting a nightclub. Though none of the players consumed any alcohol, they were nonetheless all sent home by manager Lars Lagerbäck as punishment and did not take part in the match. Mellberg and Wilhelmsson did not appeal the coach's decision, but Ibrahimović felt that it was unjust and therefore refused to take part in Sweden's next qualifiers against Iceland and Spain. He also refused to partake in a friendly against Egypt on 7 February 2007, but ended his self-imposed boycott a month later,[114] and returned for Sweden's loss to Northern Ireland on 28 March. He did not score in any of the 12 qualifying matches. Ibrahimović was awarded the 2007 Swedish Golden Ball as the "Country's Top Player of the Year."[115]
Ibrahimović ended his international goal drought, which had lasted for over two years, against Greece in Sweden's Euro 2008 opener on 10 June 2008, and the next match against Spain four days later.[116][117] He finished the tournament with two goals as Sweden were eliminated in the group stage by Russia.[118]
Ibrahimović scored a goal in a 4–0 win against Malta on 10 June 2009 in a 2010 World Cup qualifier.[119] On 5 September 2009, he scored a last second goal in Stadium Puskás Ferenc against Hungary in a 2–1 win for Sweden in their qualification match.[120]

Ahead of Euro 2012 qualification, Ibrahimović was named team captain on his return to the national team. He scored his first goals of the qualifying game against San Marino where he scored the first and fifth goals in a 6–0 win in front of over 21,000 home fans despite being down to 10 men for over an hour. His next goals came in the form of a hat-trick against Finland whom they beat 5–0.
At the Euro 2012 finals, Ibrahimović scored the opening goal in Sweden's first game against Ukraine.[121] He then scored with a volley, later considered the goal of the tournament, to open the score in Sweden's 2–0 win against France[122] in the last group match. Despite the victory, Sweden was knocked out in the group stage.
In October 2012, Ibrahimović scored Sweden's first goal as they came from 4–0 down to draw 4–4 in a 2014 World Cup qualifier againstGermany in Berlin.[123] It was the first time in its history that the German national team had not won a match after leading by four goals.[124]
On 14 November 2012, he scored all four goals in a 4–2 win over England in the first ever match at the Friends Arena.[125][126] His fourth goal, a 35-yard overhead kick with his back to goal, won him praise from players and pundits, with the BBC describing it as a goal that "combined unfathomable imagination and expert technique".[127] It would win the 2013 FIFA Puskás Award for Goal of the Year.[11]
On 14 August 2013, Ibrahimović scored another international hat-trick at the Friends Arena, scoring Sweden's first three goals in a 4–2 friendly win against Scandinavian rivals Norway.[128] Ibrahimović ended Sweden's qualifying campaign with eight goals, including two in aplay-off defeat to Portugal, as the team failed to reach the 2014 World Cup.[129]
On 4 September 2014, Ibrahimović scored his 50th international goal in a 2–0 friendly match victory over Estonia, making him the Swedish national team's all-time leading goalscorer. Earlier in the same match, he equaled Sven Rydell's record of 49 by scoring the opening goal.[130] On 8 September, he made his 100th appearance for Sweden in a UEFA Euro 2016 qualifier against Austria at the Ernst Happel Stadion in Vienna.[131]

Style of play

Ibrahimović has been described by ESPN as being "good in the air, tall, strong and agile, he plays well with his back to goal and boasts some of the best finishing, vision, passing and ball control around."[7] Although he has been criticised for his work-rate in big matches, he has scored in some of the biggest matches in football including the Milan Derby in Italy, El Clásico in Spain, Le Classique in France, and UEFA Champions League and UEFA Euro Championship games against some of the strongest opponents in football.[132][133][134][135][136] Ibrahimović is the only player to have scored for six different clubs in the Champions League.[137] Tactically, Ibrahimović is capable of playing anywhere along the front line, although he is most often deployed as a striker, or as a creative supporting forward, which allows him to provide assists for team mates.[138][139][140]
Due to his prolific goal scoring and spectacular strikes,[141][142][143] Ibrahimović is regarded by many in the sport to be one of the best players in the world and one of the most complete strikers of his generation.[144] He has however been criticised for his aggression and rebellious character at times.[142][145][146] In 2007, The Times placed him at number 44 in their list of the 50 hardest footballers in history.[147] Due to his powerful shots and volleys from inside and outside the penalty area with both feet and on dead ball situations, his agility, acrobatic ability in the air, physicality, skill, finishing and technique, Ibrahimović has frequently been compared to Dutch legend Marco van Basten.[145][148][149][150]Despite this comparison, Ibrahimović has stated that his main influence was his idol, former Brazilian superstar Ronaldo, whom he regards as the greatest player of all time.[151]

Controversies

Ibrahimović has been involved in several violent incidents with teammates, some of which have gone viral on the internet. In 2011, Ibrahimović kicked teammate Antonio Cassanoin the face while Cassano was speaking to reporters.[152] Ibrahimović has also kicked teammates Christian Wilhelmsson and Rodney Strasser during training, both caught on camera.[153][154]
After a 2004 international friendly against the Netherlands, Ajax teammate Rafael van der Vaart publicly accused Ibrahimović of deliberately injuring him during the game. Ibrahimović responded by threatening to break both of Van der Vaart's legs.[155] Ibrahimović also punched Ajax teammate Mido in the dressing room.[155]
During his spell at Barcelona, Ibrahimović had a falling-out with Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola, culminating in a dressing room incident in which Ibrahimović threw a training kit box across the room and screamed insults at Guardiola. Guardiola eventually refused to speak to Ibrahimović and loaned him out to A.C. Milan.[156] Barcelona vice-president Carles Vilarrubi reported that Ibrahimović threatened to publicly beat up Guardiola if he was not released to A.C. Milan.[157]
In 2010, Ibrahimović was involved in a training ground fist-fight with A.C. Milan teammate Oguchi Onyewu, after Ibrahimović made a two-footed tackle on him, then headbutted him. The session was abandoned after the two players were separated, and Ibrahimović suffered a broken rib. Onyewu had accused Ibrahimović of repeatedly insulting him.[155][158]
In March 2011, Ibrahimović was given a three-match ban for punching Bari defender Marco Rossi in the stomach during a game.[159] He received another three-match ban in February 2012 for slapping Napoli player Salvatore Aronica.[160]
After Sweden's 1–0 victory over the Faroe Islands in October 2012, Faroes captain Fróði Benjaminsen accused Ibrahimović of foul play and insults, describing him as "arrogant", "childish", "ignorant" and a "dirty player".[161]
In November 2012, Ibrahimović received a two-match ban for kicking Saint-Étienne goalkeeper Stéphane Ruffier in the chest.[162][163] In December 2012, Ibrahimović was accused by Lyon defender Dejan Lovren and president Jean-Michel Aulas of deliberately stamping on Lovren's head.[164] In February 2013, UEFA handed Ibrahimović a two-match ban for stamping on Valencia winger Andrés Guardado.[165][166] In March 2013, PSG winger Lucas Moura claimed that Ibrahimović regularly insulted team-mates, stating “He always asks for the ball and insults a lot. He is sometimes a bit arrogant and complains.”[167] Lucas later claimed, though, that the interview was twisted and badly translated.[168] In May 2013, Ibrahimović was filmed screaming at sporting director Leonardo after PSG's title victory.[169]
Ibrahimović's forceful comments on the disparity of achievements by and treatment of male and female footballers, including a suggestion that rewarding the woman with most national-team appearances with anything more than "a bike with [his] autograph on it" when her male counterpart received a car was "devaluing" the man's achievements, provoked reactions that his remarks highlighted "failings in the basic values of male football" and showed a lack of respect.[170]
In January 2015, Lyon coach Hubert Fournier accused Ibrahimović of abusing officials, stating that "All the referees in this league get insulted by this person."[171]
In March 2015, after a loss by PSG in a Ligue 1 match, Ibrahimović angrily ranted "In 15 years I’ve never seen a [good] referee in this shit country ... [they] don’t even deserve PSG". He later apologised, but was criticised by French politicians,[172][173] and Ligue 1 imposed a four-match ban.[174]

Personal life

Ibrahimović has two siblings and three half-siblings. His longtime partner is Helena Seger with whom he has two sons: Maximilian (born 22 September 2006) and Vincent (born 6 March 2008). He currently resides in Paris, although he still has a home in Malmö where he spends his summers. Ibrahimović received an honorary black belt in taekwondo; he attended classes at the Malmö Taekwondo club Enighet(English: Unity) as a child.[175] Ibrahimović is fluent in five languages; Swedish, Bosnian, English, Spanish and Italian.[15][176] In a February 2011 interview with Eurosport, Ibrahimović stated that one of his role models is boxing legend Muhammad Ali: "[Muhammad Ali] is one of my role models, one of my idols in sport and outside the sport also (sic)...he believed in his [principles] and he never gave [them] up."[177]Ibrahimović has stated that he is a Catholic.[178][179][180]
The name Zlatan was trademarked in May 2003 at the Swedish Patent and Registration Office for "most likely being perceived as Zlatan Ibrahimović", which meant that he received exclusive rights to the name for certain products, including sporting goods, clothing, and shoes.[181] He is under contract with Nike and features in their television advertising.[182] He wears the Nike Mercurial boot line and has the names and dates of birth of his sons embedded onto the external sides of his boots.
In the fall of 2007, Ibrahimović, with the help of Nike, self-funded Zlatan Court in the streets of the city district Rosengård in his hometownMalmö: he provided a playing matgoalpostslighting, and a modern fence.[183] In 2008, he donated new Nike kits to his youth club, FBK Balkan.[184]
While in Malmö with the national team in September 2012, Ibrahimović was honoured with the inscription of his name on the city's "Walk of Fame of Sports".[185] The Swedish Post Office issued a set of five postage stamps featuring Ibrahimovic in March 2014.[186] Zlatan features in EA Sports' FIFA video game series, and was the fourth highest rated player in FIFA 15.[187]
On 11 August 2014, Ibrahimović paid US$51,000 to send the Swedish national football team for the intellectually disabled to the INAS World Football Championships in Brazil. After teammates Johan ElmanderKim KällströmAndreas Isaksson and Per Nilsson donated autographed jerseys to be auctioned off for the cause, Zlatan responded, "What the hell are you going to do with a shirt? How much is it to go?".[188][189]
On 14 February 2015 in a league match against Caen, Ibrahimović took off his shirt after scoring a goal to unveil the removable tattooed names of 50 people suffering from hunger around the world, in a gesture to raise awareness for famine in accordance with the United Nations World Food Programme.[190]
